Tread
Lightly
Respecting the ground we drive on
What is this all about?
Off road driving is under attack from all side due to the perception that we are hooligans taking pleasure from ripping up the countryside. This could not be further from the truth and this page highlights what SWATC's attitude is towards the land we drive on.
Tread Lightly is an the name given to the driving style we ask our members to adopt. It means we ask drivers not to deliberately cause undue damage to the tracks and fields we drive on. Damage is caused by cyclists, walkers, livestock, tractors and 4x4s every time they move but we are the only one being pillories and vilified for it , so we need to make a few things clear:
We ask members
- not to cause undue damage
- to use the least damaging method of recovery
- to replace divots caused by ground anchors
- to replace soil moved by digging
- to clean their vehicles before leaving sites
- to be respectful of others we meet in the countryside
- to be ambassadors for our sport
Tread Lightly does not mean we don't go out there to have fun, it means we are responsible drivers and wish to maintain our rights of access to the countryside.
